The U.S. Department of Transportation will send $80 million to North Texas to help with the construction of four new deck parks in Dallas and McKinney.

The four projects include expanding Klyde Warren in downtown Dallas, building a new deck park across Interstate 30 in the Canyon (a part of Interstate 30 south of downtown Dallas), the expansion of the deck park over Interstate 35E near the Dallas Zoo, and a new park that goes under Texas State Highway 5 in McKinney.

The North Central Texas Regional Council of Governments had asked for $95 million, so that leaves $15 million the NCTRCG has to fund. Staff is recommending the council pick up the tab without passing costs along to Dallas or McKinney.

The parks are seen as a way of connecting communities that have been cut apart by highways.
