Difference Makers changing lives of homeless women with simple products

Two North Texas women are taking on a global issue and helping women in the process. They're this week's KRLD Difference Makers.

For two Hockaday grads it was an often stigmatized issue that brought them together again.

"Oluna is a recent social impact fashion brand," said Ali Aston, co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer." And we sell cute, comfortable, stylish, very soft pants but with a mission to shed light on the issue of period poverty in the United States."

For every pair of pants sold, Oluna donates a year's worth of menstrual hygiene products to an American in need.

Their brand is made for women by women.

"We're currently partnered with 10 local Dallas homeless shelters who receive these donations," Aston said. "But the best part is we are a women-owned end-to-end supply chain so from product conception, to creation, distribution, manufacturing, photography, legal, everything is done by women."

For Emmy Hancock, cofounder and CEO, it's not just about providing much needed products.

"So much of it is dignity. It's about feeling clean. So homeless shelters are really excited about being able to provide this for their women," Emmy said.

"As a stigmatized issue, people don't realize this but period products are the number one requested item at homeless shelters."

We're proud to call Oluna this weeks KRLD Difference Maker.
