The historic Neiman Marcus store at Main and Ervay streets is closing for good today, ending more than 100 years of the luxury retailer in downtown Dallas.
Parent company Saks Global set Sept. 30 as the last day after announcing in June that it would shut the flagship and concentrate on the NorthPark Center store. A company spokesperson said the downtown location no longer matched where customers shop. NorthPark’s business is more than 10 times larger, the company said, and elements of the downtown store — including a reimagined Zodiac Room — will move there.
The building has housed Neiman Marcus since 1914, after a fire destroyed the original 1907 store at Elm and Field. Founders Abraham Lincoln “Al” Neiman, Carrie Marcus Neiman and Herbert Marcus Sr. built the brand into a Dallas landmark. The sixth-floor Zodiac restaurant, a lunch institution since the 1950s, closes with the store.
Saks Global acquired Neiman Marcus in late 2024 and later entered bankruptcy. An earlier plan to close in March 2025 was delayed after city leaders and landlords worked to keep the store open through another holiday season. Those talks ended. City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert said Dallas was disappointed and that the store had been “a cornerstone of our central business district for more than a century.”
A WARN notice filed with the state said 67 jobs are tied to the closing. The company said it expected to offer transfers to NorthPark for a significant share of those workers, with separation packages for others.
The shutdown lands in a stretch of high-profile exits from the urban core. AT&T plans to move its headquarters from Whitacre Tower to Plano, targeting late 2028. Fifth Third, after buying Comerica, left Comerica Bank Tower for Preston Center. The Dallas Mavericks plan a new arena at the old Valley View site, and the Dallas Stars have chosen Plano’s Willow Bend; both aim to leave American Airlines Center around 2031 when leases expire, The Dallas Morning News has reported.
