The historic Neiman Marcus store at Main and Ervay streets in downtown Dallas closes for good Wednesday, ending more than a century of luxury retail at the company’s flagship corner.
FOX 4 reportsFOX 4 reports the last day of business is Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the store that has occupied the site since the company rebuilt there after a 1914 fire. Parent company Saks Global, which also owns Saks Fifth Avenue, confirmed the closure in June after earlier plans to leave were delayed. Dallas operations will now center on the Neiman Marcus store at NorthPark Center, where the company says most of its local customers already shop.
The retailer was founded in Dallas in 1907. The downtown building at 1618 Main St. became the brand’s public face and a landmark for shoppers, tourists and special events, including the well-known Zodiac Room restaurant. The Dallas Morning News reports city and downtown leaders spent months trying to keep a store in the building after Saks first moved to close it in 2025. Those talks included ideas for a smaller store and other uses on upper floors. Saks later said the decision was final.
Saks Global CEO Geoffroy van Raemdonck said it was not an easy call but that customer demand had shifted. He said the NorthPark store does far more business than the downtown location. The company has said it will recreate the Zodiac Room at NorthPark and carry some of the downtown store’s history into that site. Bridal service is also expected to move there.
A state WARN notice tied to the closing listed 67 jobs. The filing included workers who might still be offered transfers to other Neiman Marcus stores. Eligible employees were to receive separation packages if they were not transferred.
The loss lands as downtown Dallas already faces other high-profile changes, including plans by major employers and sports teams to invest outside the core. Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert said the city was disappointed but would keep working with Saks and community partners on the future of the landmark site.
Shoppers and visitors have been stopping by in recent days to photograph the building and walk the floors one last time. After Wednesday, the doors on Main Street will not reopen as a Neiman Marcus store.
