The Fort Worth Water Department has been examining the rash of water main breaks during February's arctic blast and coming up with a plan to prevent a repeat occurrence.
Officials say with Lake Worth, the shallowest of the area lakes that provide city water, that water temperature got cold enough to cause water mains to rupture in February.
Mary Gugliuzza with Fort Worth Water says there were plans to bypass that lake, but the rolling blackouts put an end to those plans.
As a result, there were about 720 broken water mains and scores of boil water notices.
Gugliuzza says the city has more than 800 miles of cast iron pipes that do not do well in cold weather, so there are plans to replace them all, and that will take about a decade to complete.
