One man is dead after he was shot by police following a vehicle pursuit in Lake Worth that ended with a standoff in Fort Worth on Thursday, police say.

The incident began when Lake Worth police conducted a traffic stop for a violation. Shortly after the stop, the vehicle fled, with the occupants firing at Lake Worth officers.

"[Shots fired] are words you never want to hear as a police chief," Lake Worth Police Chief J.T. Manoushagian said. "Losing an officer in the line of duty is my greatest fear."

No officers were hurt in the second shooting, and Manoushagian said the suspect started driving again, stopping at a relative's home in Fort Worth.

Fort Worth SWAT and a crisis intervention team responded. They said the person barricaded himself inside the home. At one point, he released a woman police believe is his mother.

Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes said the man came outside after several hours and pointed a gun at his own head and then at officers. He said officers then shot the suspect.

"As you all know, we've had multiple incidents recently where our officers have been facing deadly threats," Noakes said.

He said officers then gave first aid until paramedics arrived. The person died at the hospital. Friday morning, his name had not been released.

Manoushagian said the person had a criminal history and was on federal probation.
