Jury selection gets underway in Collin County for Karmelo Anthony, the teen accused of murdering Frisco student Austin Metcalf at a track meet. He stabbed the 17-year-old athlete to death in a dispute last April while claiming self-defense.

The high-profile murder trial of Karmelo Anthony in the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf is scheduled to begin next week in Collin County.

Jury selection started Monday in Collin County for Karmelo Anthony, the teenager charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of Frisco student-athlete Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet.

The incident occurred on April 2, 2025, at Kuykendall Stadium during the UIL District 11-5A Championship track and field event. According to authorities, the altercation took place under a Memorial High School team tent during a weather delay caused by thunderstorms.

Metcalf, a 17-year-old junior at Memorial High School and standout athlete, confronted Anthony, who was not part of the Memorial team, about sitting in their area. Witnesses told police the dispute escalated when Anthony pulled a knife from his backpack and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest. Metcalf died in his twin brother’s arms. Anthony, then 17 and a student at Centennial High School, was arrested shortly after and charged as an adult. He has pleaded not guilty and claims self-defense.

The case has drawn intense public attention across North Texas and beyond, sparking online debates, protests, and harassment directed at both families. Collin County District Judge John Roach Jr. has imposed strict rules on courtroom conduct, media access, and public behavior to protect the fairness of the trial and juror privacy. No cameras or recording devices are allowed inside the courtroom.

A grand jury indicted Anthony on the murder charge in June 2025. If convicted, he faces a possible sentence of 5 to 99 years or life in prison. The trial is expected to last several weeks as attorneys present evidence around the confrontation and self-defense claim.

The tragedy deeply affected the Frisco ISD community, where both schools are located. Metcalf was remembered as an honors student with a 3.97 GPA, football MVP, and promising track athlete. His family has spoken publicly about their loss and the importance of the upcoming trial for justice.
