Plano police took to social media last week to remind people to lock up and hide their valuables in the car to protect not only belongings but personal information.

The Plano Police Department warned thieves aren't just after gifts this time of year, they are after people's identities as well. Police said thieves have grabbed wallets and handbags left in cars, then used driver's licenses and bank cards to steal identities. Police said it's an easy crime that can happen in minutes.

Many people don't even know they have been robbed until it's too late. The thieves often use stolen driver's licenses at drive-thru lanes at banks to cash checks, usually $1,000 at a time to avoid suspicion.

If you're hit police said to notify them immediately, along with your bank and credit card companies. Also have credit bureaus freeze your information so no one can open a new credit card in your name.
