In the wake of severe storms that swept through the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex on Tuesday, several schools in Irving, Texas, have been forced to close due to extensive storm damage and ongoing power outages. The storms, which brought hurricane-force winds and heavy rain, caused significant disruptions across the region.

As of this morning, three Irving Independent School District (ISD) campuses remain closed: Hanes Elementary School, de Zavala Middle School, and Cardwell Career Preparatory Center. The closures are a result of downed power lines, a gas leak, and other storm-related damages that have rendered the schools unsafe for students and staff.

The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down in Irving early Tuesday morning, contributing to the widespread damage. Winds reached up to 110 miles per hour, causing structural damage to buildings and uprooting trees. In addition to the school closures, approximately 350 residents were displaced from their homes and apartments due to the storm.

Emergency crews have been working around the clock to assess the damage and restore power to the affected areas. Oncor, the local power company, has reported that thousands of residents and businesses are still without power, and restoration efforts are expected to continue into the coming days.

The Irving ISD has announced that all other schools in the district will operate as normal, and they anticipate resuming classes at the closed campuses by Thursday. In the meantime, the district is providing resources and support to affected families, including temporary shelters at the Georgia Farrow Recreation Center.

Residents are urged to stay safe and avoid areas with downed power lines and other hazards. NewsRadio 1080 KRLD will continue to provide updates on the situation as recovery efforts progress.
