The Texas House has a new committee to review the uses of artificial intelligence.

Speaker of the House Dade Phelan has created the House Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies to study the "current state of AI/ET and its uses," according to a news release from Phelan's office.

There will be five members, including State Representative Jeff Leach of Collin County.

Their assignment will be to recommend policies for artificial intelligence and to look at ways AI could impact several fields including government, health care, transportation, and national security.

"AI and other emerging technologies are increasingly being used in countless aspects of our everyday lives—from use by government agencies to applications in transportation, health care or personal productivity—and it is important we understand the wide-ranging implications of this accelerating technology," Phelan said in the release.

The committee's first report is due May 16th.
