Governor Greg Abbott has signed a new law that restricts public bathroom use based on a person’s sex assigned at birth.
The law, set to take effect December 4, applies to public schools, government buildings, and many other taxpayer-funded facilities. It requires that individuals use bathrooms that correspond with their birth-assigned sex, not their gender identity.
Violations could bring steep consequences. Public entities that don’t enforce the law face fines starting at $1,000 and climbing as high as $125,000 for repeat offenses.
Supporters argue the measure is about privacy and safety, while critics say it unfairly targets transgender Texans and will lead to discrimination. Legal challenges are expected in the coming weeks.
