A state district judge in Bexar County ruled that the county did not violate any laws by hiring a vendor to send unsolicited voter registration applications.
The mailings, dispatched last week by a non-partisan group contracted by county commissioners, were aimed at new residents and individuals who had changed their addresses.
"This is the way our judicial system works. We got a ruling from the judge," Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai said. "We'll see what the attorney general for the state of Texas wants to do with this lawsuit."
Sakai said the initiative was intended to increase voter registration by reaching out to these groups.
The program has faced criticism from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who filed a lawsuit challenging the practice. Paxton argued that the mailings could lead to voter fraud and plans to appeal the court’s decision.
