Drought conditions across Texas impacting the price of cattle

The ongoing drought continues in much of the state, and now it's impacting the price of cattle.

On Thursday the latest US Drought Monitor showed the worst category of drought, exceptional, strewn across the state. It's even taking up parts of Denton, Tarrant, Parker, and Wise counties.

Now auctioneers say the lack of rainfall is starting to lead ranchers to sell cattle they wouldn't normally be selling off.

Last week at an auction in Decatur around 2,200 head of cattle came through the blocks, instead of around 1,200 hundred in a normal week. That's because ranchers are starting to have a hard time finding adequate grass and water.

October is usually a wet month in North Texas, but so far that hasn't been the case this year. At DFW Airport, there's only been a little more than an inch of rain recorded. But KRLD Chief Meteorologist Dan Brounouff says things are starting to change with the chance of rain increasing into next week.

Dan says while it won't be drought-busting rain, a pattern change next week will allow for wetter weather to move back into North Texas.
