LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Hollywood writers are continuing their strike on Monday, this time outside Apple headquarters and multiple retail stores.
“Though our proposals are reasonable, Apple, a member of the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers), would rather gamble with the livelihoods of all industry workers than pay writers fairly for the value we create,” the Writers Guild said in a memo to members.
The guild also said filming on Apple TV+ productions has been “interrupted or paused for the duration of the strike.”
David Slack, a WGA member who also served on the negotiating committee in 2020, told KNX News Apple could afford to give more money to writers.
“They make $400 billion a year in revenue,” he said. “That's what they made last year and our proposals would cost Apple just $17 million for the type of quality content that writers create for their streaming service.”
The strike will occur as the company is set to unveil its new product – a mixed-reality headset that is expected to cost almost $3,000.
It also comes as the Directors Guild of America reached a tentative deal on their new contract with AMPTP over the weekend. The deal will be submitted to the National Board on Tuesday.
WGA weighed in on the announcement, congratulating them in a newsletter to members and adding, “Out of respect for the DGA’s ratification process and in recognition of not knowing the contract language they have negotiated we won’t be commenting on their deal points.”
SAG-AFTRA is the next union set to negotiate with AMPTP. That will begin on Wednesday. Meanwhile, members are continuing to vote on whether or not to authorize a strike if talks with AMPTP reach an impasse.
