The Padres lost a tough game to the Cubs on Monday evening, as the Cubs won in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 9th inning. The Padres got on the scoreboard first on Fernando Tatis Jr.'s RBI-groundout in the top of the 3rd inning. Xander Bogaerts added an RBI-double in the 4th to give the Padres a 2-0 lead. Griffin Canning battled through 4.1 innings allowing just 2 earned runs despite giving up 5 hits and 2 walks. The game was tied at 2 for the second half of the game, with both bullpens holding serve. After pitching a perfect 8th inning, Craig Stammen opted to bring Jason Adam back out to pitch the 9th inning in an attempt to save Mason Miller for extra innings. That plan went awry when Adam allowed back to back singles to begin the 9th inning, forcing Stammen to bring in Miller with two runners on and no outs in a tie ball game. Alex Bregman it a shallow single to center field and Dansby Swanson held up at third base to load the bases with no outs. Michael Busch then hit a shallow fly ball to left field and Swanson attempted to tag up an score the game-winning run, but Jase Bowen was able to throw him out at home plate for a double play to extend the game. The next batter up was Seiya Suzuki, who hit a deep fly ball to the wall, where Bowen made a leaping attempt to catch the ball, but wasn't able to come down with the ball as it hit the ivy for a walk-off single, as the Cubs won 3-2. JP Sears will start Tuesday for the Padres.
