Pet Food Recall

Recall

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday announced a recall affecting six different mixes of Sportmix pet food products. The afflicted dog and cat kibble is suspected to contain aflatoxin, a poisonous carcinogen that develops on certain crops such as corn and grains, and in soil. The affected recall is on 44lb & 50lb bags of Sportmix Energy Plus and Sportmix Premium High Energy as well as 15lb and 31lb bags of Sportmix Original Cat food that contain an expiration date of 3/3/2022 and contain a "5" after the date. Midwestern Pet Foods, the company that produces the food, has expanded the recall to include all pet food products containing corn that were made at the plant at the center of the contamination and that expire on or before July 9, 2022. That includes all other Sportmix-branded dog and cat foods as well as Pro Pac Adult Mini and Performance Puppy food, Splash Fat Cat 32% and Nunn Better Maintenance.
Symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning include sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice (yellowish tint to the eyes, gums or skin due to liver damage), and/or diarrhea. Pet owners whose pets have been eating the recalled products should contact their veterinarians, especially if they are showing signs of illness.
