A 23-year-old woman who suffered several stab wounds, including one to the chest, was pronounced dead shortly after midnight at Jefferson University Hospital.
A 28-year-old woman who was stabbed several times in the torso and arms is in stable condition at Temple University Hospital.
Chief Inspector Scott Small says detectives are interviewing witnesses and looking at social media posts they think may have sparked the violence around 11:30 p.m. Monday at the intersection of 29th and West Jefferson streets.
"We're getting some preliminary information that this was a fight that started over social media," he said.
Small said witnesses identified the stabber and gave them her name and address. He said police have interviewed her family, and they're cooperating and trying to locate her and get her to come in and talk with police.
"We know who she is. We know where she lives," he said.
Small says police also spotted neighborhood cameras and are talking to the owners of nearby homes and businesses to see if they captured video of the fight.
