What brings Eagles fans joy is that Super Bowl LIX was a team effort, says correspondent

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — KYW listeners may know CBS News congressional correspondent—and ardent Eagles fan—Scott MacFarlane for his knowledge of what's going on in Washington, D.C. But on Monday, he joined KYW's Michelle Durham live from Capitol Hill to talk about something else.

Michelle Durham: Scott, good afternoon. First of all, you texted me last night during the game with sentiments similar to what Eagles fans here were feeling. I felt sick to my stomach, because I kept waiting for the Chiefs to take our dream away.

Scott MacFarlane: Yeah. When was the bottom gonna fall out? Were we the only Eagles fans nervous at halftime? Because maybe it's just our nature to always be a little bit apocalyptic.

But here's three things I can tell you for certain:

I'm the most obnoxious person in Washington, D.C., today, and I'm proud of it. I'm proud of telling everybody, unsolicited, how great the Eagles are and how great the Eagles were.

There are Pennsylvania members of Congress who are challenging me for that title. Some of our local members of Congress are pretty proud and outward with their Eagles fandom, Congressman Brendan Boyle being chief among them.

And that Merrill Reese call that you just played again, that's gonna be my new ringtone. You have to show me, Michelle, how to make that my ringtone.

Well, that's fine. What I love the most about the Eagles' performance was that every member of the team participated in the win, not just a few of the notables.

Yeah, it means a lot to people that, you know, Jalen Hurts also deferred to Kenny Pickett to take those final snaps. It shows the real teamwork and team attitude that helps you win.

And Coach [Nick] Sirianni was trying to emphasize that in all his news conferences yesterday -- that we are a team, and greatness breeds greatness.

But I think that one of the things that brings joy to Eagles fans is that this isn't just a Patrick Mahomes controlling a game and singularly willing it to victory -- that this is a team that did it.

And for all of us who shed shed some tears in 2005 when Donovan McNabb came just short, and those of us who were so frustrated two years ago when that bad penalty deprived the Eagles of a third Super Bowl title, this all feels like vindication, Michelle. And I'm one of the many Americans who is trying to find a way to take a vacation day Friday to get on SEPTA and get to that parade.

I do not blame you. What was your favorite part of the game and when did you know we were gonna win?

Boy, that pick 6 by the birthday boy [Cooper DeJean] sure felt good, didn't it? It started making you a believer versus just a hoper.

And you know, with Patrick Mahomes, you never really feel confident. But when you saw the Eagles front four making his life so miserable, you could see it in his eyes, you could see it in his throws, that this was a different kind of day.

And there are Eagles fans from coast to coast. We all exist in our own cities. We are making ourselves heard, no matter where we live today, including in NFC East and the country.

Well, it's interesting because many people have asked me why you're an Eagles fan, as you obviously live in the D.C. area. Do you care to shed some light on your good taste?

I was a classmate of [former Eagles quarterback] Donovan McNabb's at Syracuse University. In fact, he and I took a bunch of classes together and became pretty close. So when he got drafted by the Eagles, it solidified my fandom.

But I also married into an Eagles family. And you really can't be an outlier when you marry into an Eagles family.

My father-in-law from Chester. My family all with Delaware County roots beyond that. There's no escaping it. And we're so proud. And I look forward to being in the city Friday through Sunday to soak this in.

Scott, thank you so much. I am going to talk to you on Wednesday about Capitol Hill, though.

We'll do it.
