PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 15-year-old boy was struck and killed by a New Jersey Transit River Line train Thursday morning in Palmyra, New Jersey.

NJT officials say the boy was crossing at Chestnut Street at 8:19 a.m. when he was hit and killed by a northbound train.

According to a message on the Borough of Palmyra Facebook page, the boy was a Palmyra student-athlete. Calling his death an “unbearable tragedy,” the message went on to express sympathy to the boy’s family, friends and neighbors from Mayor Gina Ragomo Tait, Borough Council members, police, first responders and all borough staff and volunteers.

There were no injuries reported among the 28 passengers on board at the time, nor the light rail vehicle operator, said Everett Merrill, a public information officer with NJ Transit.

NJT ran temporary bus service along the route between Cinnaminson and Route 73, while rail service in both directions was suspended.

New Jersey Transit Police are investigating.
