PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Historic Philadelphia, Inc. is working with Carpenters’ Hall to host a series of tea party events with a hint of history for the entire family.
Carpenters' Hall is a key landmark in American history, as it served as the venue for the First Continental Congress in 1774. The building became a gathering place for representatives from the 13 American colonies who met to discuss their grievances against British rule and played a role in shaping the nation’s path toward independence.
The Tuesday tea parties will be hosted by historic figure Dolley Todd Madison, former Philadelphia resident and neighbor of Carpenters’ Hall. The former First Lady will be played by Johanna Dunphy, an actress with History Philadelphia, Inc., who’s portrayed Madison for over a decade.
“Well I am looking forward to meeting all the people in Philadelphia,” said Dunphy, as she took on the persona of Madison, known for her hostess charm serving high tea. “We would love to have you out for tea.”
In character, Dunphy will share Madison’s perspectives on key historic events, like the Philadelphia Tea Party and Boston Tea Party, over sweet treats and high tea.
“Also the burning of the White House will also come up because that’s a big moment in her life and something she is very much known for,” Dunphy said.
Recounting Todd Madison’s memories, she’ll pour a bit of hot tea of her own.
“How she met James Madison — that’s an interesting story there,” Dunphy said.
The Philadelphia high tea parties will be every Tuesday at Carpenters’ Hall, 320 Chestnut Street, starting Feb. 4 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
“Please bring your friends and we will have a tea together, have a sandwich together, and have just a lovely Tuesday afternoon,” said Dunphy, in character as Todd Madison.
