PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The former police chief of the Bordentown Township Police Department was sentenced to more than two years in prison for lying to FBI agents regarding a 2016 case of excessive force.

Frank Nucera was sentenced to 28 months in prison on Wednesday. He was convicted in October 2019 of making false statements to FBI agents who were interviewing him about an arrest in September 2016.

On the latter date, Nucera is accused of ramming a handcuffed teenage suspect into a metal door jamb.

Authorities say Nucera lied to FBI agents multiple times, claiming that he never touched the 18-year-old suspect during the arrest.

At trial, prosecutors argued the arrest was a hate crime because the teen is African-American. However, the judge declared a mistrial on two specific counts regarding a hate crime charge and a civil rights violation.

Sixty-four-year-old Nucera will not start serving his 28-month sentence until the remaining counts are resolved, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey.
