Germantown pet food pantry helps families and animals in need

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Germantown pet supply shop is serving food for family pets during the pandemic.

No dog or cat is left behind at the corner of Germantown Avenue and High Street. Queenie's Pets, a pet food shop and dog walking company, created Queenie's Kibble Kitchen, a free pet food pantry, to help families and their pets during the pandemic.

Adina Silberstein with Queenie's says the community need was too great to turn a blind eye.

"People started losing their jobs, and not being able to feed themselves let alone their beloved animals," she said.

Now after more than 15 years in the community, the company saw a chance to give back.

"We've always wanted to have a philanthropic branch of our company, so this was the perfect opportunity," said Silberstein.

"Our company has the mission of making the lives of pets and their humans better. So we are able to translate that mission over to the Kibble Kitchen and do just that in a new and exciting way."

The contact-free Kibble Kitchen is open every other Thursday at 4 p.m. It will open next on December 3. Since its inception in March, the pantry has served more than 200 families.

"We have regulars come now and they really depend upon us being there," said Silberstein, "and we have new people all the time who see us on the street with our table and pull their car over and say, 'Oh my gosh, is this free?'"
