PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — One of the groups approved to receive the COVID-19 vaccine earlier than others are those who are obese, but many don’t agree with that categorization.
About 40% of Americans have a body mass index (BMI) of more than 30, putting them in the category that considers them to be obese. People with obesity are currently eligible for the vaccine in at least 29 states.
Recent reports found people are frustrated with the term “obese,” and as a result, they are denying themselves access to the vaccine.
This is a case where you should not let a medical term impact your decision. If you have the chance to get it, you absolutely should get it, not only to protect yourself but protect others.
Psychologists say don’t connect this label to your self-worth. There are many people who are heavier as a result of genetic factors and conditions that impact metabolism. Athletes, too, with increased muscle mass can also be labeled obese.
