NORRISTOWN, PA (KYW Newsradio) — Pennsylvania state and local officials gathered on the grounds of the former Norristown State Hospital, a psychiatric facility, to celebrate the start of the property’s redevelopment.

Norristown is working with Montgomery County’s Redevelopment Authority to make proposals on how to develop the site.

State Representative Matt Bradford was key in the negotiations process in getting the land turned over from state control, back to Norristown.

He feels there is an ongoing need for mental health services.

“This wasn't doing right by the residents of the neighboring community,” Bradford said. “But frankly, even folks who are receiving services in neighboring buildings, you had buildings that were dilapidated, burned out and literally falling down – roofs had collapsed.”

Bradford said the state hospital is contracting to a much smaller footprint and allowing a redevelopment of 67-68 acres.

Thomas Lepera, Norristown council president, says the project gives them a chance to change the narrative.

“For 30-40 years, Norristown has carried the water for not only Montgomery County, but for the five-county area as far as social services goes,” Lepera said.

“Those services should be spread out evenly, so that a place like Norristown could sustain itself.”

He feels this is a monumental opportunity that gives them a chance to reposition themselves in the regional marketplace.

Proposals for development are expected in summer 2023.
