PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — If you’ve ever walked out your front door to find a massive truck taking up all the curb space, council member Anthony Phillips feels your pain.

Which is why Phillips, who won Philadelphia's ninth district council seat in a special election, introduced a resolution Thursday – that was unanimously approved – to hold hearings that will explore ways to help truck drivers and owners find parking, ultimately keeping them out of residential neighborhoods.

He also introduced a bill that would make it easier to ban truck parking in his district.

He finds the practice of parking heavy commercial trucks on what should be quiet side streets a “quality of life issue.”

“Residential neighborhoods across the city are inundated with vehicles that diminish the beauty, liability and desirability of life,” Phillips said. “For residents of the ninth district, today is the beginning of relief from intrusive trucks on residential blocks.”

While Phillips is pushing for trucks to stay in designated areas, he says he also sympathizes with truck drivers and owners and wants to explore more nuanced solutions through the hearings.

“I believe this is a problem we can solve and we can make it a win-win for residents and truck drivers alike.”
