PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Local baker Abby Dahan believes food is like a universal hug.
“If you’re a pastry chef or baker, a chef in general, that’s how we communicate,” she said. “That’s our love language.”
So last week, when Russia launched its attack on Ukraine, Dahan had an idea of how she could help civilians. Within just a few days, she reached out to her Philly baker friends, both in real life and on Instagram, and coordinated the Bakers for Ukraine collective.
She asked everyone to bake about 25 items of whatever they love to make, and all items will be sold on Sunday, March 6, in Center City.
“Just thinking about these poor people and these kids, it just really broke my heart,” said Dahan. “I was like, let’s do anything to help.”
The bake sale will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — or whenever they sell out — at Her Place Supper Club, located at 1740 Sansom St.
All money raised will be donated to the World Central Kitchen, which is working to feed thousands of families in Ukraine and on the Polish border. Anyone who can’t make it to the bake sale can donate online directly to the World Central Kitchen.
“Philly rallies. We’re ralliers, especially for a good cause and a good cause that involves food,” Dahan added. “Our joie de vivre is rooting for the underdog, so this is, I think, really hitting home for a lot of people.”
