PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker signed three bills Wednesday at a public event to underscore her commitment to restoring public safety.

The bills include a ban on illegal gambling machines, a curfew on certain businesses in Kensington, and a ban on devices that flip license plates, which helps drivers evade police.

“From day one, I’ve been adamant in my promise and my commitment to the people of Philadelphia that this administration would do everything in its power to restore order in our city,” said Parker.

The ban on gambling machines has already been challenged in court, which Parker said would not deter the city. The bill’s sponsor, Councilmember Curtis Jones, said the machines in corner stores prey on the vulnerable and create a hostile atmosphere in the community.

“What this mayor and this council did today is say, ‘Enough is enough,’” he said.

The Kensington curfew would apply to about two dozen businesses on Kensington Avenue and surrounding streets, between Lehigh Avenue and Tioga Street. Councilmember Quetcy Lozada, the bill’s sponsor, called it a good day for Kensington.

“I’m excited for the residents of Kensington and the businesses who played a part in ensuring that the quality of life is ensured in their community,” she said.

The bill, intended to reduce nuisance activity, applies to smoke shops, corner stores and take-out restaurants, but not chain stores or businesses with liquor licenses.
