Update: Dec. 17, 5:35 p.m.
PennDOT's Brad Rudolph sent KYW Newsradio this update on the sinkholes along Route 202:
"Additional fill operations and concrete placement will resume as soon as the rains end on Monday.
"At this time, I don't have a definitive answer on when the 2 SB lanes and the 1 NB lane will reopen and whether it will open at once or lane by lane. We will issue a press release when the traffic pattern changes."
Original story follows:
PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Just days after a sinkhole shut down Route 202 (Dekalb Pike) heading north in King of Prussia, crews have found another sinkhole underneath the southbound lanes.
On Thursday, the sinkhole that gave drivers grief over the summer reopened, closing Route 202 between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard.
PennDOT said it was due to a water main issue.
Then, on Friday night, around 7 p.m., crews had to close the southbound side when a second sinkhole popped up.
Not only is this the second sinkhole discovered since Thursday, it’s the third since July.
About a week after that one underwent repairs, the road was closed, again, due to “pavement failure,” according to PennDOT.
A reopening date hasn’t been given yet, which has nearby shops like Marian’s Attic, a thrift store on east Dekalb Pike, worried about business.
“We have quite a few shoppers that come here on their lunch hour and they really don’t have to do it now because it’s taking them maybe 3-4 times longer to get around the area,” said Lisa Christinzi, the assistant manager of Marian’s Attic.
PennDOT says the road will remain closed until engineers can further assess damage.
Experts say this section of 202 is more susceptible to sinkholes because of limestone, which erodes underground.
