PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Walnut Street pedestrian bridge over I-95 is closing as work to build a cap over the interstate at Penn’s Landing moves ahead.

The bridge will be closed for about four years starting Tuesday, Sept. 5. People who use that walkway will now have to cross Columbus Boulevard at Dock Street.

PennDOT Spokesman Brad Rudolph says, since springtime, crews have been relocating electric and utility lines in preparation for large-scale demolition of the existing I-95 cover between Walnut and Chestnut streets.

“Along with the utility work this spring, crews built foundations for a stairway east of Columbus Boulevard,” Rudolph said. “And that’s for the next extension of the South Street pedestrian bridge, which is one of the main components of the cap project.”

The Scottish and Irish Memorials at Front and Chestnut streets will be relocated to the new cap. Rudolph says the construction will require occasional lane and ramp closures on I-95, but most of the work will be done overnight.

Groundbreaking for the cap project was delayed by the I-95 collapse at Cottman Avenue, but Mayor Jim Kenney and Gov. Josh Shapiro are expected to be at Penn’s Landing Wednesday for the official start of construction.

Construction on the $329 million project is expected to conclude in 2027.
