PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Gov. Phil Murphy's restrictions on indoor sports in New Jersey have been lifted. Practices and games are allowed to resume with strict limits on spectators, but this doesn't mean everyone is back in action yet.
This reinstatement includes contact and non-contact sports that are considered low-to-high-risk activities. No spectators are allowed if there are already 10 or more coaches and athletes in the building. This removes the governor's restrictions on practice and competitions, but not everyone will be back immediately.
Youth and recreational sports can pick up right away, as can gymnastics and dance schools.
Official high school sports already have pre-determined start dates and schedules from the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association that are unaffected.
High school basketball, bowling and fencing resume practice on January 11, and games start on January 26. Swimming and winter track can start practice February 1 and meets begin Feburary 16. Wrestling and gymnastics start practice March 1 and competitions resume on March 16. Tournaments and invitationals aren't allowed, so only two teams at once.
No out of state competitions will be permitted. And there will be no NJSIAA-sponsored post season. That means no high school state championships in any winter sport this year unless there are changes. Conference championships can be held locally and at the conference's discretion.
Youth sports in Pennsylvania are scheduled to resume on Monday and a board is meeting this Thursday to determine if sports can resume in Delaware on January 11.
