For most of Tuesday's game against the Nationals, Washington's bottom-ranked bullpen shut down the Padres' offense in a bullpen game. Riley Cornelio opened the game pitching 3 perfect innings. Zak Kent and Yovanny Cruz combined for 3 more shutout frames. Yohandy Morales hit a solo homer off of Casey Mize in the 2nd inning and Brady House knocked a 2-run double off of Randy Vasquez in the 6th, and it looked like the Nationals were going to come away with a win on a night where the Diamondbacks had beaten the Royals in extra innings. But the Padres rallied in the bottom of the 8th inning while trailing 4-1. Xander Bogaerts, Freddy Fermin and Fernando Tatis Jr. drew three consecutive walks to load the bases with no outs to begin the inning. Austin Hays then hit a pinch-hit sac-fly to make it a 4-2 game. After a passed ball allowed Tatis Jr. to advance to second base, putting two runners in scoring position, Manny Machado hit a chopper back up the middle to drive in both runs and tie the game. Later in the inning, Luis Campusano hit a blooper into shallow right field just over the second baseman's head with two outs to bring in Machado from second base and give the Friars their first lead of the game. With Mason Miller unavailable, Adrian Morejon was called upon to close things out in the 9th, and pitched a 1-2-3 inning to earn his third save of the year. The Padres will try to complete the sweep on Wednesday.
