“I was feeling overwhelmed just the other day and — I can talk openly about that,” Puth shared before detailing how music has the power to center his mind. “Just a couple of simple chords… I was just playing chord, chord, chord, chord and it instantly brought the tension down.”

While all it takes is four simple chords for Puth, he says opening up through his lyrics is something he takes pride in and not only benefits him, but fans going through similar challenges as well.

“Even on a song like, ‘That’s Not How This Works,’ that was kind of therapeutic for me in a way because it felt like such a release. I had all these feelings I had just kept in the back of my brain and shoved under the mental carpet and putting that into the world and into a beat, into melody, not only helped me but I feel like it helped a lot of other people who listen to my stuff too,” he explained. “Music is definitely a therapeutic tool.”
