HOUSTON (SPORTSRADIO 610) – Four days after being placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list, J.J. Watt was a surprising participant Thursday during the first day of Texans' training camp.

"It surprised me a little bit too.  I feel great, I had a really good off season working with the guys," Watt told the media following Thursday's practice.

Watt wasn't aware that the Texans were going to place him on the PUP list when they made the transaction on Thursday.

"I found out I was on PUP when you tweeted it.  I've been planning on practicing the first day the whole time," Watt said.

The Texans didn't disclose why they placed Watt on the PUP list, but it's common for veterans to take it easy early and throughout camp.  Watt also is coming off his first season in three years in which he was able to avoid major injury.

"It was probably for those early training camp days so I wouldn't have to go out there and do all that and just make sure I was one hundred percent ready to go," Watt added.

It was only day one, and they weren't in pads, but Watt's energy could be felt and he caught the attention of one of the offensive stars.

"He's annoying, that's what he is, he's annoying.  He tipped two or three balls of mine," Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson said of Watt.  "That was one tip that I took from today that he told me about, that when he sees me looking in a direction he kind of stops and stands there and times his jump so I learned that lesson."
