AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- Austin Mayor Steve Adler says the "blinking yellow light" in new COVID-19 hospitalizations across the area is starting to turn orange, meaning action needs to be taken.

Adler touched on his thoughts on the pandemic and the recent spike in both cases and hospitalizations in a letter to the community Sunday morning.

This week, Austin saw a spike in Coronavirus cases. We are about to pass the 20 new daily hospital-admission  for a seven-day rolling average. At this point, our blinking yellow warning light is turning orange, which means our hospitals seem to be headed to an overwhelming surge in admissions.  We have some decisions to make and trade-offs to consider as we approach the red zone.  Make no mistake, we will be seeing more hospitalizations and deaths. We need the Governor’s help enforcing masks and social distancing if we are to keep re-opening the economy without overwhelming hospitals.

Right now, there is available capacity in our hospitals and the conditions are very safe. This is a good time to take care of ourselves and those we love. If you have been considering getting a physical, having a procedure done, or otherwise going to the hospital, now would be a great time.  Please don’t delay or wait to get treatment, seek medical attention, or have something checked.

With the latest data Sunday, the 7-day moving average of new hospitalizations has passed the "Stage 4" threshold, rising to 20.6. 30 new patients alone were admitted on Sunday, according to Austin Public Health.

Texas continues to see new hospitalizaations growing across the state, with another all-time high on Sunday at 2,287 patients. Hospitalizations have been steadily rising since Memorial Day, when only 1,511 Texans were hospitalized.
