DUNCAN, S.C. – For the first time in the Reggie Shaw era, the Byrnes Rebels can call themselves outright region champions.
Behind a five-touchdown performance from Tre Segarra III and another explosive night offensively, Byrnes rolled past J.L. Mann 56-20 Friday night at Nixon Field, securing the Region 1-5A championship.
While Shaw has previously guided the Rebels to a share of a region championship, Friday night's victory marked his first outright region title since taking over the program in 2017.
It was also a fitting way to close out the home portion of the regular season, as the Rebels celebrated Senior Night in front of the home crowd.
The win improved Byrnes to 7-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in region play, extending its winning streak to six games.
It wasn't necessarily the start Byrnes had hoped for, however.
The Rebels opened the game with an impressive 11-play, 80-yard drive, capped off by a one-yard touchdown run from Segarra to take an early 7-0 lead.
J.L. Mann responded by taking advantage of a Byrnes interception, as quarterback Wilkes Mellard connected with Buddy Griffin for a 12-yard touchdown to tie the game at seven.
The Patriots would strike again late in the opening quarter, this time on a one-yard touchdown run from Mellard, giving J.L. Mann a surprising 14-7 advantage heading into the second quarter.
From that point forward, it was all Byrnes.
The Rebels erupted for 29 second-quarter points, beginning with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Gideon Merhib to Segarra that tied the game at 14.
On J.L. Mann's next offensive possession, Emerson James intercepted Mellard, setting the Rebels up at the Patriots' 21-yard line. Segarra wasted little time, finding the end zone on the very next play to give Byrnes a 22-14 lead following a successful two-point conversion by Jean Ndabian.
Merhib would later connect with Mason Stevens on a 25-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 29-14.
J.L. Mann managed to cut the deficit to nine with a six-yard touchdown run from Mellard late in the half, but the Rebels answered once again.
With just 38 seconds remaining before halftime, Merhib found Jacobie Fuller for a 25-yard touchdown, sending Byrnes into the locker room with a 36-20 advantage.
Any hopes of a second-half comeback for the Patriots were quickly put to rest.
Byrnes scored 20 unanswered points in the third quarter, beginning with a 69-yard touchdown run from Segarra that pushed the lead to 43-20.
Later in the quarter, Fuller connected with Segarra on a 10-yard touchdown pass before Merhib found Abram Burroughs for a 25-yard score to make it 56-20.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
Segarra was nearly unstoppable throughout the night, finishing with 194 rushing yards and three touchdowns on just nine carries. He also caught three passes for 60 yards and two additional scores, giving him 254 total yards and five touchdowns.
Merhib turned in another impressive performance under center, completing 12 of his 15 passes for 249 yards and four touchdowns. He also added 30 yards on the ground.
Nic Watson led the Rebels in receiving with four catches for 76 yards, while Fuller finished with three receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown. Fuller also contributed a 10-yard touchdown pass and 25 rushing yards.
As a team, Byrnes put together one of its most impressive offensive performances of the season, piling up 602 yards of total offense on just 42 plays.
The Rebels rushed for 316 yards and added another 286 through the air, averaging an impressive 14.3 yards per offensive play.
Defensively, Byrnes held J.L. Mann to 272 total yards, including just 124 on the ground. The Rebels also forced two interceptions, with James and Lamire Adams Jr. each recording a takeaway.
Wyquail Moss led the Rebels with four tackles, while Nasir Angram, BJ Leverett and Dawson Fowler each finished with three.
For J.L. Mann, Mellard completed 16 of 22 passes for 148 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He also accounted for two rushing touchdowns.
The Patriots finished with 15 first downs compared to 25 for Byrnes.
Despite the convincing victory, penalties remain an area the Rebels will need to clean up heading into the postseason. Byrnes was flagged 13 times for 114 yards, something that could become costly against tougher competition in November.
Still, Friday night was about much more than another win.
For Shaw and the Rebels, it was an opportunity to accomplish something the program had not done outright during his tenure.
After several seasons of working to get Byrnes back to the top of its region, the Rebels have finally done it.
And with the regular season winding down and the playoffs right around the corner, Byrnes appears to be playing some of its best football at the right time.
The Rebels will close out the regular season Friday night on the road at Eastside before turning their attention to the Class 5A state playoffs.
For now, though, the Region 1-5A championship belongs to Byrnes, and this time, the Rebels don't have to share it.
