First District South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace, chair of the Congressional Golf Caucus, is among Capitol Hill critics who say, the merger of the PGA with Saudi Arabia-based LIV Golf is a sordid sample of hypocrisy in the cash-fueled machinery of pro sports.
Yes, there IS a Congressional Golf Caucus. It doesn't have anything to do with the game itself. It exists because the World Golf Association and its offshoots spend time and money, lobbying lawmakers on behalf of the industry.
The industry reckons as a source of employment for around two and a half million Americans. However, Nancy Mace told "Fox News Sunday" interviewers she can't see how the pending union between LIV Golf and the PGA is in the best interest of anyone but the Saudis.
There is sentiment among some in the House and Senate that the Saudi government is looking toward sports entertainment, as a dose of positive PR. That PR would combat a dark side of religious persecution, suppression of women's rights and, of course, the birthplace and occasional refuge of 911 mastermind Osama Bin Laden.
The House and Senate are both calling for the merger to be scrutinized against anti-racketeering statutes.
