Could Spencer Rattler be a potential Falcons target?

The Atlanta Falcons reportedly have some interest in the former South Carolina Gamecock, Spencer Rattler. The front office sent a "large contingent" to his pro day last week and he could be a target to back up Kirk Cousins.

The Atlanta Falcons have been busy at the quarterback position this offseason. After signing the top-rated free agent in Kirk Cousins they followed that up with a trade of their former starting quarterback -- but they may not be done.

According to NFL Insider Tony Pauline, the team had a “large contingent” at the Pro Day for South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler. This comes on the heels of reportedly having “good talks” with him at the NFL Combine in February.

Could he be a potential target to back up the 36-year-old Kirk Cousins with the potential to blossom into a future starter?

"Look, you can find a guy in the later rounds that has huge upside," Mike Johnson said about still drafting a quarterback this April. "I think Spencer Rattler kind of fits that. When you look at the arm, all the measurables and tangibles -- huge arm, great frame. He can play the game at a high level and fit some really good throws into some tight windows."

Rattler completed 67.5 percent of his passes while throwing for 6,212 yards and 36 touchdowns in his two seasons in Columbia. The arm talent that the 24-year-old brings to the table is undeniable, but he still has a bit of development left to do -- as evidenced by his less-than-stellar interception totals (20) -- and why he's projected as a day-two player come draft weekend.

But perhaps a few seasons behind the likes of Cousins and Taylor Heinicke could be what Rattler needs to finish that developmental process.

"Kirk Cousins is a great guy [to have] in that quarterback room," Beau Morgan said about the potential room for growth in Atlanta for Rattler. "Kirk plays off this corny sort of personality... but he's a smart guy. He's a hard worker and the first guy there in the film room."
