When an assistant yelled for Coach Farmer on Tuesday evening, two heads turned instead of one. Jason Farmer (pictured right) and son Mason Farmer (pictured left) found themselves on the same football field on Tuesday as Boiling Springs High School hosted a summer league passing tournament. Those who follow high school football in the Upstate know what kind of an impact Jason Farmer has made for nearly 32 years as a head coach and an assistant. Now, the dad gets to watch the son create a name for himself.

"It was never in the cards for me to be a coach like he was," said Mason Farmer on Tuesday evening. "I always had a dream of coaching with him and that didn't work out the way we wanted but because of the opportunity Coach Reel has given me at Boiling Springs I now have the chance to make a name for myself instead of just being referred to as Coach Farmer's son."

When Mason Farmer was asked what he has learned most from his dad, his answer came very easy. "Everything. I know the right way to be coached and I also know what it takes to be disciplined the right way. The biggest thing I have learned from him (Jason) is that there is nothing wrong with asking for help."

While it may not have been in the cards for Mason to be a teacher and a coach, his dad saw things differently as he watched his son grow up. "I really think Mason got the itch during the Covid year in 2020. His senior season was shortened and I believe that was when he realized he didn't want to miss out on the opportunity to coach and teach."

Jason expresses gratitude to Matt Reel and the staff at Boiling Springs High School for giving Mason this opportunity. "I am very thankful for Coach Reel for mentoring him and allowing him to be a part of this great profession."

While Mason walks the sideline at Boiling Springs assisting with the ninth-grade team, his dad Jason will continue to build his legacy as an assistant for Lynn Fleming at Broome High School. While the father and son are both appreciative of their respective opportunities, it's the students in the Upstate who should be the most appreciative to have the Coach Farmers of the world teaching and molding young men.
