The South Carolina Athletic Hall Of Fame has announced its class of inductees for 2023. The list is headlined by former NBA star and Columbia native, Jermaine O'Neal. It also includes former NFL and NCAA Football stars and represents five sports in total.
O'Neal was one of the nation's top high school basketball players while at Eau Claire High School. He is the youngest person to ever play in an NBA game and was a six-time All-Star Selection.
Greenwood's own Robert Brooks is also a headliner amongst the eight-person class. Brooks starred for the Gamecocks before being selected in the third round of the 1992 NFL Draft. He helped the Green Bay Packers win a Super Bowl while playing with legendary QB Brett Favre.
Dynamic former Clemson QB Woody Dantzler is in this year's class, as well. He set NCAA and school records during his playing days in "Tiger Town." Another star college QB is in the group with Joe Hamilton, who was a Heisman runner-up while starring at Georgia Tech.
Others in the class include former Gamecocks track and field star, Dawn Ellerbe, Negro League Baseball legend and Benedict College alumnus "Chino" Smith, wildly successful Clemson golf coach, Larry Penley, and the first-ever soccer coach at South Carolina, Mark Berson, who started his coaching career at The Citadel.
