A Clemson player is receiving attention around the college baseball world after being named the winner of a national award. Clemson Pitcher and 1st Baseman Caden Grice has been named the winner of the John Olerud award, given to the nation's most outstanding two-way player.
Grice is a Greer native who starred at Riverside, one of the state's top high school baseball programs before signing with Clemson.
As a junior this past season, Grice was 8-1 with a 3.35 ERA in 14 starts on the mound. He earned All-American honors at the plate, hitting over .300 with 18 home runs and drove in nearly 70 runs on the season.
Grice becomes the 1st Clemson player to ever win the award. He's the first ACC player to win it since 2017, when Brendan McKay won it for the 3rd straight year.
The award's namesake, John Olerud was a standout Pitcher and 1st Baseman at Washington State. Olerud then went on to have a 16 year MLB career and was a member of the back-to-back World Series Championship teams in Toronto in 1992 and 1993. The Blue Jays defeated the Atlanta Braves to win the 1992 World Title.
