Divine Nine host Ecumenical Service in Selma for 55th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday

Selma

Salute to Selma Women’s March 2020 The National Pan Hellenic (NPHC) member groups all came together in Selma, Alabama, to commemorate the 55th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday and the Voting Rights Act.

More than 3,000 packed the auditorium of Selma High School for the Divine Nine Ecumenical Service. V-103/WAOK News & Public Affairs Director Maria Boynton was the mistress of ceremony and, in her opening remarks, pressed the importance of voting.

During the service, national and local leaders of the NPHC Council represented their Greek organizations and drove home that there is power in our voice. The ecumenical message was delivered by Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, President of the General Board and Presiding Prelate-Tenth Episcopal District, AME Church and National Chaplain, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

The purpose of the service was for the Divine Nine to come together and pay homage to those who fought for voting rights for African Americans. They also challenged everyone to return to their communities and push for a large turnout at the polls and participation in the U.S. Census.
