As temperatures soar across the metro area, the City of Atlanta is reminding residents to take precautions against extreme heat to prevent dehydration, sunburn, and heat-related illnesses.
In a newly released advisory, the city's public safety officials shared four simple but important tips to keep cool and safe:
- Apply sunscreen every 1–2 hours: Protect your skin from harmful UV rays by reapplying sunscreen regularly, especially if you're spending time outdoors.
- Avoid wearing dark colors: Dark clothing absorbs more heat. Opt for light-colored, loose-fitting clothes to stay cooler.
- Avoid drinking alcohol: Alcohol can speed up dehydration and impair your body's ability to regulate temperature.
- Drink 60–80 ounces of water per day: Staying hydrated is essential to avoid heat exhaustion and maintain energy.
The city urges everyone, especially seniors, children, outdoor workers, and those with chronic health conditions, to be mindful of heat exposure as summer temperatures reach their peak.
For more information on how to stay safe in the heat, visit the City of Atlanta's official website or follow updates on the city's social media channels. If you or someone you know shows signs of heat-related illness, such as dizziness, confusion, or excessive sweating, seek medical help immediately.
