Harris rakes in nearly $50M following Biden’s endorsement

Vice President Kamala Harris raised almost $50 million in grassroots donations on Sunday after President Joe Biden announced he was backing out of the 2024 Presidential election and supporting his VP to replace him.

The news was shared by Lauren Hitt, a spokesperson for the Harris campaign, noting that the donations came from “everyday Americans.”

“Since the President endorsed Vice President Harris yesterday afternoon, everyday Americans have given $49.6 million in grassroots donations to her campaign,” Hitt said in a statement.

Harris remains a top option to replace Biden as the Democratic nominee, and she shared on Sunday that it was her intention to “earn and win” the party’s nomination.

Biden decided to back out of the race almost a month after his disastrous debate performance sparked worry and concern among Democrats about his ability to beat former President Trump.

“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” Biden wrote on social media.

This was followed by a statement from Harris, announcing her plan to seek the nomination at the Democratic National Convention next month.

“Over the past year, I have traveled across the country, talking with Americans about the clear choice in this momentous election. And that is what I will continue to do in the days and weeks ahead,” Harris said.

The Hill reported, citing a person familiar with the matter, that Harris has already begun working for the nominee, making more than 100 calls on Sunday to party leaders, governors, members of Congress, labor leaders, civil rights groups, and more.
