The YSL Trial seems to get more and more surprising as the days go on. One may say that surprises should be expected when Young Thug, a rather eccentric chart topping rapper is on trial for allegedly being the leader of a street gang, but some of this week's shenanigans put this trial in a category all of it's own.
To many, this is a trial on how freedom of expression in rap lyrics can lead to guilty convictions. Thursday in court, Young Thug, who's real name is Jeffery Williams' defense attorney Brian Steele, played the music video for Lifestyle for the jury in an effort to prove that Young Thug is not apart of a street gang. He argues that other rappers in that video, fellow Atlanta native Rich Homie Quan and Birdman, do the same hand gestures, but they haven't been accused of being in a street gang.
Steele goes on to argue that there are other celebrities who do certain things that emulate gang signals though they aren't affiliated with these criminal organizations. He then brings up Serena Williams crip walking and LeBron James wiping his nose and saying slime to his teammates.
The trial is set to resume Monday January 22.
