Lafferty, 26, has recorded two points (no goals, two assists) in 10 games for Pittsburgh this season. He has 21 points (six goals, 15 assists) in 94 career games across three NHL seasons. Lafferty is signed through the end of this season with a $750,000 cap hit.

Nylander, 23, had a disappointing tenure in Chicago. He hasn’t appeared in a game for the Blackhawks since the 2019-’20 season, when he had 26 points (10 goals, 16 assists) in 65 games. Nylander missed the 2020-’21 campaign due to knee injury and never established himself this season, playing in the AHL after not breaking through with the Blackhawks.

Chicago traded young defenseman Henri Jokiharju to Buffalo for Nylander in summer 2019. While Nylander hasn’t produced, Jokiharju has carved out a solid role with the Sabres.
