Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - After nearly three years serving the City of Buffalo as Public Works Commissioner, Buffalo's Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon announced Friday that Nate Marton will be departing city government.
According to Mayor Scanlon, Marton was approached by his future employer a few months ago, and subsequent discussions led to his decision to pursue a new opportunity.
"After nearly three years of service with the City of Buffalo, I want to extend my sincere thanks and best wishes to Department of Public Works Commissioner Nate Marton as he transitions into the next chapter of his career," said Scanlon in a statement on Friday.
Marton joined city government in late 2022 under the leadership of former Mayor Byron Brown. He was immediately tested in his role as Public Works Commissioner with a pair of historic winter storms in November of 2022, followed by the Christmas Blizzard just weeks later.
Since then, Marton has led the Department of Public Works through numerous challenges, including other major snowstorms and high wind events, to once-in-a-generation infrastructure projects, critical investments in our parks and city fleet, and even a rare tornado last year August.
"Looking back over the past two-and-a-half years, it has been a privilege to serve the residents of the City of Buffalo and lead the women and men of the Department of Public Works," said Marton in a statement. "I extend my sincerest thanks to Mayor Brown and Mayor Scanlon for the opportunity to serve this community and for their steadfast support of me as Commissioner, as we collaborated to move the city forward with projects to improve our parks, roadways, facilities, infrastructure and services and fought our way through historic storms and extreme weather events.
"Although I am leaving city government, I am proud of the work that has been accomplished during my tenure and extend my thanks to all of the Department and city-wide team members for their efforts every day for our residents. I look forward to watching the progress continue."
In the interim, City Engineer Nolan Skipper has been appointed to serve as Acting Commissioner of the Department of Public Works.
