Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - As the clock turned back one hour Sunday morning, some drivers think this will be an advantage heading to work Monday. However, AAA warns that is not necessarily the case.
"Everyone thinks, 'Oh, we're going to get an extra hour of sleep. We're falling back. That's great, and it is, but that's not going to disrupt my system.' But that's actually not the case," says Elizabeth Carey from AAA of Western and Central New York. "Anytime you adjust the clocks like this, it does mess with your system a little bit."
Carey says it means drivers are going to have to get used to a brighter morning on the way to work.
"Then coming home, it's going to get dark so much earlier," she added. "Kids could still be outside playing after school, so keeping an eye out, especially in school zones, residential areas for children, scanning the road and just making sure that you're being extra safe."
As your circadian rhythm adjusts to the time change, Carey notes you'll have to be more aware as you drive, especially with wildlife.
"The animals are always out at dawn and dusk. So we're warning people to keep an eye out for animal strikes as well, because lot of times people see that and they're thrown off a little bit, and next thing you know, there's a car deer collision," Carey warned.
And if you are a pedestrian or a cyclist, Carey recommends to make sure you're visible with reflective clothing on so you can be seen as well.
