Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) Dreaming of a White Christmas in 2020 across Western New York? Don't get your hopes up, but it's not completely out of the question either.
The 8-day outlook calls for temperatures in the mid 40's for the middle of next week.
"It's going to be close," said WBEN and WKBW Meteorologist Aaron Mentkowski. "I think areas South of Buffalo have a better chance, but we'll have to wait and see."
According to the Buffalo office of the National Weather Service, historically, there is a 58 percent chance of a white Christmas (defined as an inch or more of snow on the ground) since snow depth records started in 1893.
Last year, the high temperature was 50 degrees and there was no snow on the ground, ending a three-year streak. 2016, 2017, and 2018 all had at least an inch of snow on the 25th.
The highest temperature recorded on December 25th in Buffalo is 64F degrees in 1982. The lowest temperature on Christmas is -10F in 1980. The high temperature averages 34F degrees and the low 22F degrees on Christmas.
The greatest precipitation recorded on Christmas Day was 1.14 inches in 2003. The 8.4 inches of snow measured in a Christmas storm in 2002 was the greatest snow for this date.
