Marginal risk of severe weather, Air Quality Alert posted as wildfire smoke returns

"You're going to see a similar situation to what we had a couple of weeks ago."

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Not only is the smoky haze of Canadian wildfires impacting the weather in Western New Yourk, but a weather system moving through is also bringing with it a marginal threat of some severe weather for portions of the region.

"Isolated severe storms with damaging winds are possible," say National Weather Service forecasters.

Meanwhile, an Air Quality Alert is posted for all of New York State Monday due to the return of the smoky and hazy conditions.

After moving into the region late Sunday from west to east, forecasters say smoke from Canadian wildfires will linger across the region through Monday, before dissipating.

"You're going to see a similar situation to what we had a couple of weeks ago because of the air quality degradation resulting from the wildfires in Canada," New York Governor Kathy Hochul said Sunday

AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO MIDNIGHT EDT MONDAY NIGHT
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation at Albany has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for Fine Particulates from midnight tonight to midnight EDT Monday night.
Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 151 for Fine Particulates. The Air Quality Index...or AQI...was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value...the greater the health concern.
When pollution levels are elevated...the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young and those with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician.
