A shooting rampage took place in the northern part of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia on Sunday, killing at least 16 people, including a police officer.

The 51-year-old male shooter was identified as Gabriel Wortman, who disguised himself and his car as a police officer and police vehicle to make it seem like a Royal Canadian Mounted Police member was responsible, AP News reports.

Wortman was arrested at a gas station in Enfield, northwest of downtown Halifax.

RCMP Chief Superintendent Chris Leather said, "In excess of 10 people have been killed. We believe it to be one person who is responsible for all the killings and that he alone moved across the northern part of the province and committed what appears to be several homicides."

"It almost certainly will be more than 10," Leather said of the death count. "How much more than 10, I do not know."

The deceased police officer has been identified as Const. Heidi Stevenson, mother of two. Police have not determined a motive for the attack.

The incident began in the rural town of Portapique. Police advised residents to remain in their locked homes and stay in their basements.

Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil said, "This is one of the most senseless acts of violence in our province's history."

"My heart goes out to everyone affected in what was a terrible situation," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.
